WRITING AND GRAMMAR We will continually work on writing and grammar. It may not seem like you are seeing a lot of writing pieces. This is because we will be working through the writing process and writing and rewriting pieces. Because it is such a long process, students will be graded throughout the process on use of time, peer editing, making corrections, etc. in addition to receiving a grade for the final draft of the paper. It is VERY important that students take part in EVERY step of the writing process. Failing to do so will affect the final grade.
5th grade social studies focuses on the history of the United States - pre-Columbus through the writing of the Constitution.
We use Otter Creek math to practice math facts. It is important students know the basics. Any students that do not have their math facts memorized needs to work on these each night.
We are using New York Engage as our math program. While I know the shift is confusing, it is a great program which focuses on understanding concepts and being able to explain the concepts not just going through the work.
We will start with using the scientific method. It is important to understand these steps so we are able to conduct experiments appropriately. We will be covering many areas including space, plants, matter, energy, etc. It should be an exciting year!
